Disband so called war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh
Protest in New York: Memorandum to Secretary General of United Nations and Govt of Bangladesh
New York: Coalition of Bangladesh America Association has handed over a memorandum to Secretary General of United Nations today demanding the disbanding the so called war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh, establishing a UN mandated International Commission of Inquiry to investigate all atrocities during the 1971 war in Bangladesh. The Association also handed over another memorandum to the government of Bangladesh with the same demands.
Thousands of Bangladeshi from different areas of New York start gathering at around 11 pm in front of UN chanting slogans.
Presided over by Prof. Qazi Ismail Hussein the protest gathering was addressed by convenor of the association Dr. Fazlul Huq, council member Rasheduzzaman, Secretary General of Writer’s’ Forum of North America Naimuddin, President of Humanity Club Rashid Ahmed, Alam Chowdhury, Azizullah, Mahbubur Rahman and Aminur Rasul Jamsed.
Speakers of the gathering mentioned that Bangladesh Government has ignored recommendations of international human rights bodies to correct the flaws in the war crime tribunals of Bangladesh and recently through the media leaks of the conversation between the tribunal chief and an outsider has completely lost the trust of citizen of Bangladesh.
The speakers demanded to establish tribunal in line with the existing standard of UN Tribunal for Yugoslavia or Rwanda or international criminal court.
The speakers also condemned the heinous attempt to ban the leading bangla newspaper Amardesh arrest its editor. They demanded the arrest of ruling party activists who killed a young man named Bishajit during hartal called by opposition alliance on and release of all political leaders including Mirza Fakhrul of Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
