News - All Razakars, Al-Badrs not necessarily war criminals: Hanif
Dhaka, Dec 24 (UNB) – Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Monday said all the members of Al-Badr and Razakar, the vigilante groups during the Liberation War, are not necessarily war criminals.

“All the members of Al-Badr, Razakar and collaborators are not necessarily the war criminals. Those against whom have specific allegations of killing, rape, loot and arson during the Liberation War in 1971 are the war criminals,” he said.

After the Liberation War, Hanif said, Bangabandhu had pardoned those against whom there was no specific allegation of killing, rape, loot and arson.

The Awami League joint secretary general came up with the remarks in reaction to BNP chairperson’s Khaleda Zia’s demand for initiating the trial of those war criminals in the Awami League.

The Awami League leader was addressing a discussion programme organised by Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad marking its 19th founding anniversary at Milon Hall at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the city.

Turing to the opposition’s movement, Hanif warned that the subversive activities of the opposition BNP in the name of movement will not be tolerated.

“Awami League believes in democracy and the government doesn’t obstruct any peaceful programme. But the government won’t tolerate any subversive activities in the name of programme that causes public sufferings,” he said.

Hanif issued the note of warning in response to BNP leaders’ threat to enforce non-stop hartal if the government obstructs their mass contact programme scheduled for December 26.

“BNP leaders are making the comment so that they can claim after the programme that it has not been successful because of the government’s obstruction though people have no support for their programme,” said Hanif, also a special assistant to Prime Minister.

Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, MP, Awami League Health and Population Affairs secretary Badiuzzaman Bhuiyan Dablu, BSMMU vice chancellor Prof Pran Gopal Dutta, among others, spoke at the programme held with president of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and Health Minister AFM Ruhal Haque in the chair.
